Limassol


Located on Akrotiri Bay on the southern coast, Limassol (Greek: Λεμεσος - Lemesos; Turkish: Limasol, Leymosun) is the second most populous, and largest in terms of area, city in Cyprus. As of 2011, Limassol municipality had a population of 101,000, with 183,656 people living in the metropolitan area.

  1. Limassol (Greek: Λεμεσος - Lemesos; Turkish: Limasol, Leymosun) is a city located on Akrotiri Bay on the southern coast of Cyprus.

  2. As of 2011, Limassol municipality had a population of 101,000, making it the second largest city in Cyprus. The metropolitan area (also in 2011), had a population of 183,656.

  3. Limassol is one of the busiest ports in Cyprus, and one of the busiest in the Mediterranean transit trade.

  4. Limassol was built in between two ancient cities, Amathus and Kourion (also known as Curium). During the Byzantine period, Limassol was known as Neapolis, which means "new town".

  5. Limassol has been inhabited for a very long time. Graves found in the area date back to 2000 BCE.

  6. One of the most famous incidents in the history of Limassol occurred in 1191 during the Third Crusade:

    • The King of England, Richard the Lionheart conquered Cyprus after being refused help on the crusade by the Byzantine governor of the island, Isaac Comnenus.

    • During these events, the ancient city of Amathus was destroyed, and the inhabitants moved to Limassol.

    • Richard the Lionheart then married Berengaria of Navarre, who was crowned Queen of England while still in Cyprus.

    • In 1192, Richard the Lionheart then sold the island to the House of Lusignan in 1192 (the Lusignans then remained in control of Cyprus for almost 300 years).

  7. Just to the West of Limassol is the Akrotiri Sovereign Base Area, which is territory under British sovereignty - part of the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
