Cyprus Museum

The Cyprus Museum (also known as the Cyprus Archaeological Museum) is the oldest and largest archaeological museum in Cyprus. It was established in 1882 (although construction of the current building only began in 1908), and is located in 1 Museum Street in the capital of the country, Nicosia.

Today, the Cyprus Museum remains the main location used for displaying archaeological finds made before independence (1960), however the museum's collection has far outgrown the capacity of existing buildings. As a result, there have been discussions about obtaining additional buildings, although none have come to fruition as yet. In the meantime however, the Cyprus Museum only displays the most important recent acquisitions, and other acquisitions and finds have been placed in local district museums.

The Cyprus Museum is divided into fourteen rooms or galleries, and contains archaeological finds from the Neolithic to Roman periods:

Room I: Artifacts from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods including figurines, stone vessels, tools, and clay vessels.
Room II: Pottery from the early Bronze Age.
Room III: Pottery from the middle Bronze Age to the Roman period.
Room IV: Hundreds of clay figurines and statues that were found around an altar in the Archaic sanctuary at Agia Irini.
Room V: Egyptian and Assyrian influenced statues, mostly carved from limestone.
Room VI: Hellenistic and Roman influenced statues, mostly made from bronze or marble.
Room VII: Coins, seals, glass objects, lamps, and jewellery from several periods in Cyprus' history.
Room VIII: A reconstruction of tombs as used from the 4th millenium to the 4th century BCE.
Room IX: Grave monuments.
Room X: Exhibits showing the evolution of writing in Cyprus.
Room XI: Artifacts from the royal tombs of Salamis.
Room XII: Exhibits showing the evolution of ancient metallurgy in Cyprus, including mining and smelting copper, and metalwork.
Room XIII: Sculptures from the Roman gymnasium excavated in Salamis.
Room XIV: Clay figurines from the early Bronze Age through to the Roman period.
