Paphos Roman Mosaics

Ancient mosaic found at Fabrika Hill:
Ancient mosaic found at Fabrika Hill, Paphos, Cyprus
Paphos was the capital of the island of Cyprus during the Roman period, and as a result, a number of Roman villas with fine mosaics have been found. The mosaics may be seen at Kato Paphos near Paphos Harbour.

This collection of Roman mosaics dates from the 2nd century to 5th century AD) recovered from Roman villas. The mosaics depict scenes from Greek/Roman mythology, and are considered to be some of the finest surviving Roman mosaics in the entire Eastern Mediterranean region. Here is a list of the mosaics on site:
  • The House of Dionysos: Mosaics dating from the 2nd century AD, including many depictions of the god Dionysos, the god of wine.

  • The House of Theseus: Mosaics dating from the 2nd century AD, including geometric designs and designs based on mythology - the latter including "Theseus killing the Minotaur", and the "Birth of Achilles".

  • The House of Orpheus: Mosaics dating from the 3rd century AD with designs inspired by mythology: "the Amazon", "Hercules and the Lion of Nemea", and "Orpheus and his Lyre".

  • The House of Four Seasons: Mosaics dating from the 3rd century AD, with a design based on a personification of the four seasons.

  • The House of Aion: Mosaics dating from the 4th century AD, with scenes inspired by mythology: "Apollo and Marsayas", "the bath of Dionysus", "beauty contest between Cassiopeia and the Nereids", "Leda and the swan", and "the Triumphant procession of Dionysus".
