Ayia Napa (Greek: Αγια Ναπα; Turkish: Aya Napa) is a resort in the Famagusta district of Cyprus. It is located at the extreme eastern end of the southern coast of Cyprus.

  1. Ayia Napa is resort on near the extreme eastern tip of the southern coast of Cyprus.

  2. Ayia Napa is located to the South of Famagusta, and just to the West of Cape Greco (the headlead projecting from Southeast Cyprus).

  3. Ayia, and the area around Ayia Napa is known as Kokkinochoria, a name which derives from the red color of the soil.

  4. Ayia Napa is named after a Venetian-era monastery (built in 1500) of the same name, which is today located in the center of town. The monastery was built after an icon of the Virgin Mary was discovered by accident by a hunter in a local cave.

  5. Ayia (Agia) means "holy", and Napa means "wooded valley" - a reference to the thick forests which once surrounded the area.

  6. In the past, Ayia Napa was known as a family vacation destination, but in recent years, has gradually become better known for its bustling nightlife.

  7. There are several beaches in Ayia Napa, all of which have been awarded the EU blue flag in recognition of their level of cleanliness and their facilities. The beaches in Ayia Napa include:

    • Harbour Beach (also known as Limanaki or Pantahou Beach): Caters for families - the longest beach in Cyprus.

    • Nissi Beach: Used mainly by young people, and which can get very crowded.

    • New Gold Bay (also known as Lanta or Landa Beach): A quieter beach than the others, but still with good facilities.

  8. The town square in Ayia Napa, known as "The Square", is home to many nightclubs, restaurants, and tourist-orientated shops.

  9. Cape Greco (the headland projecting from Southeast Cyprus) is just a short drive away from Ayia Napa. As well as seeing beautiful scenery, a variety of activities are available there.

  10. Ayia Napa (and Cape Greco specifically) is, according to some locals, home to the Ayia Napa sea monster. This legendary creature is said by some to resemble a cross between a dragon and porpoise. Others have however linked it to Scylla, a monster from Greek mythology.

  11. Since 1985, Ayia Napa has hosted the Ayia Festival. This is an annual event which takes place usually in late September each year, and includes festivities reflecting the agricultural, cultural, and historic traditions of Ayia Napa and Cyprus as a whole.

  12. Since 2010, Ayia Napa has also hosted the Ayia Napa Youth Festival, which is a festival principally focused around popular music, but also including other activities.

  13. Ayia Napa is also home to the Waterworld Themed Waterpark - the largest waterpark in water. The park includes many rides and attractions, and is open from about April to October each year.
